Get to know my girls!

Let me tell you about my wonderful dogs!

(short for Chips Ahoy—I was into cookies at the time and her coloring reminded me of a chocolate chip cookie!) is a shepherd mix and is about 12 years old. She appeared in my driveway 12 years ago as a puppy with 3 siblings. Someone just dropped them off. SOME PEOPLE!! At any rate, I found a home for one, took two to the Humane Association and kept Chips. She is a sweetie pie, but age is definitely taking a toll. She has severe arthritis and hip dysplasia, so has a difficult time getting around. Mostly, she just stays on the deck on her bed, sleeps and barks when she thinks it is appropriate! I love her dearly.

My second dog is Ebbie

(short for Ebony). When she arrived she didn’t have one white hair on her body! When she opened her mouth—all you could see were her teeth, which was a little disconcerting in the beginning. She is the only dog I have ever been around that actually smiles. At first, I though she was baring her teeth—but as I got to know her, I realized that she only did it when she was really happy. She is another mixed breed. She showed up at my door and proceeded to adopt Chips and me. She is now 10. I can’t believe how quickly the time has flown! She was a fence jumper, but even after the first time she jumped my fence, she chose to come back. I did try to find her owner, but had no success—and now I am thankful that I didn’t. She has a black tongue, so many people think she might be a lab/chow mix. I think she looks like she has some akita. Truth is—I have no idea. She is not a barker—she only barks when it is something really important. She is, however, a howler. Every time an ambulance goes by,  she joins in with a mighty howl! She is one of the gentlest dogs I have ever known and I love her with all my heart.

And then there is Kassie—she was a PLANNED puppy. Kassie is a Bernese Mountain Dog.

I followed the progress of her gestation and birth and flew to NY to get her. It was her first and last flight. At the time she was about 9 lbs. and barely fit in the carrier! I don’t think she is sad about it though. The flight for her was long and hot, as they wouldn’t let me take her out of the carrier. She did OK, but don’t think she really has any desire to do it again! She is very attached to me. As a matter of fact, about 90% of the time, she is within about 10 feet of me. If the other two start to bark, she will go to the door and join in, but won’t go outside. You would think that she would want to spend more time outside—but apparently she reserves that for muddy days when she can play in the mud!!!
