My World

Kassie on couch2

Hi!  My name is Kassie and I am a Bernese Mountain Dog. If you have been following this blog, you may have already heard about me.  My mom asked me to write this, since I apparently had nothing else to do. I don’t know what makes her think I have nothing to do…sleeping is something! She’s pretty busy today, so I told her I would help out.  I thought I’d write about what I know best–Berners, also sometimes known as BMDs!

>

For starters, Bernese Mountain Dogs are NOT St. Bernards!   We don’t even look like them!

Saint Bernard

Bernese Mountain Dogs are what they call “tri-colored” because we have three colors in our coat: black, white and rust. The colors are in very specific places. We have white on our chests—ideally in the shape of a cross, white on our muzzle, a white blaze between our eyes, white on our paws and white on the tip of our tail. I, myself, only have about 10 white hairs on the tip of my tail, but it still counts! Some Berners have what they call a “Swiss Kiss”. That means that they have a white patch on the back of their neck. The rust color appears above the white around our ankles (pasterns) and a dot of rust appears above each eye. Some people call us four eyes because the rust above our eyes looks like another set of eyes. We also have rust under our tails. The rest of our body is black. We have black noses and lips. And, we don’t drool…another thing that makes us different from St. Bernards! I have long, thick, slightly curly hair. Some Berners have less curly hair than I have but we all shed—A LOT!

Mom brushes me and vacuums everyday just to keep up when I am shedding. pulling-out-hairIt’s not that bad all the time, but I have to admit…there’s a lot of hair.  I wonder if any of it is hers??????

Bernese Mountain Dogs originated in Switzerland and are named for the Canton of Bern. We originally were farm dogs. We watched over the entire farm and helped our masters by driving dairy cattle and pulling carts to market. But our favorite thing was being companions to the farmers. As you can imagine, because we had such an important job, we had to be fairly large. I myself weigh about 90 pounds. Males can be much bigger….the first I ever met weighed 150 pounds—a bit overweight, I’d say! But as you can imagine, we are not the kind of dog that gets to ride around in a stroller!

Berners are smart (even if I do say so myself)

and we love our families. We have different personalities just like everybody. Some are outgoing and some are more reserved. Some love to get out and meet people and others are more homebodies. I, myself am more of a homebody. I get kind of nervous when Mom takes me to the Pet Store. People are always coming up and trying to pet me. Could I tell you something? Not all dogs like for people to just come up and pet them. When you see a dog in a store, always ask their human if it is OK to touch them and then do it exactly like their human says! That goes for all dogs, not just Berners.

>

Like I said, we love our families. We want to be with them all the time. I like to be as close as possible to my Mom. I follow her every time she moves to a different room. I especially like to be in the middle of the kitchen when she is cooking dinner so she has to step over me!   Shhhh(Don’t tell, but I also like to sit on her feet when she is in the bathroom! )

Today, you can see Berners doing all kinds of things. If their humans are in to showing, then you can see them in conformation, obedience, carting, agility, herding, rally and free style. There are even Berners that go in to hospitals and nursing homes—they’re called Therapy Dogs. But the thing we like the best is being with the people we love.

We Berners have great personalities, but you have to remember since we are big dogs it takes a while for us to mature. I am 2 ½ years old and I am still considered a puppy. Puppies can get into a lot of trouble and big puppies can get into a lot more! When I was about one, I went through a counter surfing stage. Because I was tall enough, I could get to things Mom had left on the counter, like knives and spatulas and one time a steak she was thawing for dinner! She took all of them away—even the steak! I even stole a bag of chocolate chips one time. She didn’t find me until I had eaten about half of them. Boy!–was she upset! We had to go to the vet and they made me throw up! I found out later that chocolate is really bad for dogs—it can even kill them—so I decided I wouldn’t eat any more chocolate!

I liked to steal other things when I was younger. I loved to steal dirty paper napkins and Kleenex and swallow them before Mom could take them away from me. One time I stole a pair of Mom’s pantyhose. That meant another trip to the vet so they could pull them out of my stomach! Yuck! No more pantyhose for me!

BerneseMountain Dogs are great dogs—although I may be a little bit prejudice! But if you are thinking about getting one, be sure to go to a reputable breeder. If you aren’t planning on showing your dog, and you are planning on just having a family pet, you might check with the Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue group.

There are a lot of things to consider. There are people out there that get a dog because it is cute when it is little—and take my word for it—puppies don’t come any cuter than Bernese Mountain Dogs puppies!   To prove my point, check out this video!

>

Like I was saying, puppies don’t come any cuter than Bernese Mountain Dog puppies.  But then, when the dogs start to grow up and getting into mischief, they want to get rid of them. That’s not fair. If you are going to get a dog—any dog—make sure that you are ready for the responsibility. Make the commitment that you are going to be its forever home. If you can’t do that, don’t get a dog. Get a stuffed toy … or maybe a figurine …until you are ready to make a commitment for a lifetime.

Gotta run! Mom just rattled the dog food bag! See ya!
